The South Asian Cochrane Centre is located in India at the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The Centre is hosted at the Prof. B V Moses and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Advanced Centre for Research and Training in Evidence-Informed Health Care in the Bagayam campus of CMC Vellore. The South Asian Cochrane Centre is an independent Centre of The Cochrane Collaboration.

The Centre is also part of the South Asian Cochrane Network, a devolved network of sites situated at academic health-sciences institutions in India (5), Pakistan (2), Bangladesh (1), and Sri Lanka (1). Each site contributes to and supports the activities of the Network.

The South Asian Cochrane Network(SACN) was initially established as a branch of the Australasian Cochrane Centre in January 2005 to coordinate the training and support needs for the growing number of review authors based in the region, and to promote awareness of The Cochrane Collaboration. This followed an exploratory meeting in Goa in December 2004 that was attended by 25 Cochrane review authors and editors from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The South Asian Cochrane Network & Centre was formally registered as one of the 13 independent Centres of The Cochrane Collaboration on 15 July, 2008.

The countries for which the South Asian Cochrane Network & Centre is currently the reference Cochrane Centre include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. We are looking for partners in Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal and the Maldives.

There are currently over 400 active contributors to the activities of the Cochrane Collaboration from the region and the majority of them are authors or co-authors of Cochrane Systematic reviews. Six of them are editors of Cochrane Review Groups.
