(with a special focus on nephrology)
Chrstian Medical College, Vellore
Jan 20, 2012
Learning objectives
- To enable participants to understand what is reliable evidence and the role of systematic reviews and meta-analysis in informing health decisions;
- To help participants appreciate the need for specific research designs to answer specific research questions;
- To help participants understand the components of a Cochrane Systematic Review, including how to assess included studies for the risk of bias, and to interpret forest plots describing the results of meta-analysis;
- To facilitate their understanding of the process and methods to be used to move from research evidence to health policy decisions by demonstrating and discussing the GRADE approach to creating summary of findings tables and evidence profiles and the GRADE process used by guideline panels.
Evidence-Informed Healthcare
Reliable evidence is required in order for health decisions to be made that have the best chance of improving health outcomes.
The best source of reliable evidence comes from systematic reviews of studies that are designed to minimize the risk of bias (systematic errors, and the effects of confounding) that lead to wrong results.
The best single source reliable evidence to inform health decision-making is The Cochrane Library (www.thecochranelibrary.com), an online collection of evidence-based databases that is available free to access, read, and download (pdf files of systematic reviews) by anyone in India.
